Louise's Girl Guide Memorabilia CollectionMy NEEDS / WANTS | My TRADERS / DUPES The Purpose of this SiteEventually, I'd like to make a photographic dictionary of all the Canadian Girl Guide badges, pins, and insignia you're likely to encounter, and identify what they are, how they would have been worn, and what needed to be done to earn them. As you might imagine, this is a big job and I certainly don't have the expertise that many collectors do. I am, however, learning as I go along and many of you have already been very helpful (Thank you!!). Eventually I plan to make a proper site for this, but I thought this is better than nothing for the time being. Ideally, when I can, I would like to collect stories from those of you who've earned one of these badges, or have been in Canadian Guiding. For example, I'd love to hear about interesting things you learned, "blooper" type stories, people you met, adventures you went on in the process of earning a particular badge or award. Please email me if you have any stories you'd like to share! My Connection to GuidingI'm actually not doing anything Guiding at the moment - I've just finished a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, and I'm looking for a job, so I'm not sure where I'll be settling, and I'm travelling a fair bit. I did, however, grow up with Guiding, doing Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, and Rangers (Sparks was after my time). I've also been coast to coast with my military family, everything from Guides in BC to Rangers in Nova Scotia. Things I DO Collect
Basically, anything to do with what was worn on uniforms! I'm currently focused particularly on Canada (since that's where I'm from), but also collect Commonwealth country stuff on a casual basis. Things I ALSO SORT OF Collect
Unlike the US, which has a flat hierarchy for its councils and a finite amount of them, just over 300, Canada has a huge Area/Division/District structure, and so far I've counted upwards of 2000 of these! A few of them are extinct, and not all of them have patches, but likely the majority do (and sometimes multiple designs). I am chugging away at adding patches to my collection, but I have no fantasies that it will ever be "complete". I still love trading these though!
I don't really collect US Council patches, though I don't mind trading for them if someone needs something from me. So many people collect council patches too, so I figured I'd do something different. Therefore, I've got the beginnings of a Council ID strip (the "hamburger" patches) collection, rather than a regular council patch collection. I'd like to put them in a scrapbook with a map of the US, showing council boundaries, and have a page for each council with pictures from that council's geographic area. Things I DO NOT Collect
I do have a few though, mainly ones from when I was growing up. Any that aren't from when I was growing up are traders, unless I think they look really pretty. :-) Mystery PatchesI have a few mystery patches! Check this page to see if you can identify any of them. Any help would be appreciated! LinksHere are links to a few good sites for trading, particularly for Canadian patches.
